Basically any ADSL/VDSL combined Modem/Router from a third party manufacturer such as Asus, Netgear TP-Link etc., will work, but none are what you might call a ‘direct replacement’.

Re: Plusnet hub 2 as a modem only Bridge mode literally makes the Hub Two act as a modem and nothing else.
It is exactly what you are asking about. The Eero equipment will need to be configured to use PPPoE and your Plusnet broadband username and password if you’re going to be connecting it to a bare modem.

Yes, you can buy your own router providing you also buy your own modem to go with it.
How long does a Plusnet router last
If it’s kept powered on 24/7 so it is not subjected to warm up/cool down cycles and well ventilated (and out of direct sunlight) so it doesn’t get too hot it’s quite reasonable to expect 5 to 10 years.
How do I reset Plusnet
Use a paper clip, pen, or something pointed to press in the reset pinhole button on the back of the router.
Keep the button pressed for 20 seconds. When the light on the front of your Hub turns green, release the reset button.
When the light on the front of the Hub turns blue, it’s now restored to factory settings.
How can I speed up my Plusnet internet
Don’t connect too many devices to your hub as it may slow your broadband down.
If you’ve got a TV, console or PC use an Ethernet cable for a more reliable connection.
Try testing your Wi-Fi with more than one device – this will allow you to see if the issue is with your device rather than your broadband service.
